Established in 1994, The Village Press is the largest producer of New Zealand extra virgin olive oil and avocado oil. The Village Press has been at the forefront of the New Zealand extra virgin olive oil production since the industry’s humble beginnings in the early 1990s. There are many varieties of olive trees planted throughout New Zealand with the biggest plantings located in the Hawke’s Bay, Wairarapa and Canterbury. The most prominent varieties are Barnea, originally from Israel, and Frantoio and Leccino which have origins from Tuscany in Italy.
In 2000 as more and more people discovered the fine oils produced by The Village Press and its popularity grew, the need for a larger home became apparent. The Village Press moved from its small processing line at Black Barn Winery, Havelock North, to a larger site at Sileni Winery, just south of Hastings. Another 15 years later, The Village Press was on the move again to its current location at Kirkwood Road, Hastings where there was plenty of space to expand production to meet demand once more.
The Village Press has a passionate collection of growers with the majority based in the Hawke’s Bay. The largest grove of 30,000 trees is located just north of Napier. The remaining fruit is sourced from Wairarapa and Kapiti Coast.
