Why extra virgin?
Not all olive oil is created equal. Extra virgin is the highest grade, the freshest, and the one that retains everything that makes olive oil genuinely good for you.
WHAT IT MEANS
What extra virgin actually means
Extra virgin olive oil is simply the juice pressed from fresh olives. It is the only cooking oil produced without the use of heat, chemical solvents, or industrial refining. It goes from fruit to bottle with nothing added and nothing taken away.
To carry the extra virgin designation, an oil must pass chemical analysis confirming strict acidity and quality standards, and a panel tasting by trained assessors. Most olive oil on supermarket shelves does not meet this standard. We never compromise on it.
FRESHNESS
Why freshness is everything
The polyphenols in extra virgin olive oil: the compounds responsible for its health benefits and its distinctive peppery flavour, degrade from the moment of pressing. An oil that was technically extra virgin when it left the factory may have lost a significant portion of those benefits by the time it reaches you.
That is why we display press dates on our Global Village range, and harvest dates on our Village Press range. Freshness is not a marketing claim. It is a measurable fact.
HEALTH
The health story
Extra virgin olive oil is the most studied cooking fat in human nutrition. Decades of research consistently link high-quality EVOO consumption to cardiovascular health, reduced inflammation, gut health support, and cognitive function.
The Mediterranean Diet, of which EVOO is the cornerstone, is repeatedly identified as one of the healthiest dietary patterns on earth. The key is quality and freshness. A degraded oil does not deliver the same results.
